Hi from Canada!

Hi everybody!
It's Emily writing from a city called Toronto in Canada. Only just been on the plane for fourteen painful hours! Thank god everybody had little TV screens on the back of their chairs. I wouldn't have flown the flight it weren't for those little TV screens. I watched about eight whole movies. Then I got bored of watching movies so I started reading wizard of OZ, then I fell to sleep, but of course you don't want to read about every little detail about what I did on the plane so I'll start with the weather...

IT IS ABSOLUTELY FREEZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You MUST have very warm clothes to scarcely survive in this weather! And we dont have many warm clothes in Dubai because the weather is WAY too HOT...but here, it WAY too COLD!\

We are the CHAMPIONS!!!

I just wanted to say that we WON the swim league and we have now mmmmm... let me see FOUR TROPHIES!!!!

In year three a boy and a girl went up to collect the trophy, we didn't get the year four trophy for the year five trophy myself ( Charlotte ) and Kian went up to get the trophy & in year six Emily and someone else went to get it and finally the MASSIVE trophy which was silver Kiera & William went to get it!

I thought Jason and the Argonauts was really good...my favourite part was when Hercules and another guy ( I can't remember his name ) stole some stuff from Achilles shrine, and then he came to life!
And I also liked the skeleton battle it was hilarious!

I would just like to say that all the swim squad people ( Matthew, Charlotte, Hazel, Oisin and Rory.) are going to have another league in Abu Dhabi at an American school ( I think!) against 5 other schools!

Last time we came 3rd out of 5 schools but that's ok, we are aiming to come 1st if not 2nd or 3rd again!

Jason And The Argonauts

Pelias usurps the throne of Thessaly by killing King Aristo. However, there is a prophecy that he will be overthrown by a child of Aristo wearing one sandal. When he kills one of Aristo's daughters after she had sought and been granted the protection of Hera, Pelias makes an enemy of the goddess.
Years later, Jason, Aristo's son grown to manhood, saves the life of Pelias during a chance encounter, but loses a sandal doing so. He does not know that he has rescued his father's murderer, but Pelias recognizes his nemesis. Pelias keeps his identity secret. However, he cannot just kill Jason; the prophecy also says that he himself would die.
When he learns that Jason is considering undertaking a dangerous quest to obtain the fabled Golden Fleece to rally the people of Thessaly, Pelias encourages him, hoping that he will be killed in the attempt. Men from all over Greece compete for the honor of joining Jason. Since their ship is named the Argo after the ship's builder, they are dubbed the Argonauts. Among those chosen are Hercules and Acastus , the son of Pelias, who is sent by his father to sabotage the voyage.
Jason is taken to Mount Olympus by Hermes to speak to the gods Zeus and Hera. Hera tells him that she wishes him well, but that Zeus has imposed restrictions on her assistance. (Jason, like all mortals, is unknowingly a piece in the game which the gods play against each other - like a game of chess.) Jason learns that he can only ask Hera's for help five times. In response to Jason's unasked questions, Hera also tells him that the Fleece does exist and that it lies in the land of Colchis, on the other side of the world.

Many dangers threaten the expedition. When the Argonauts run perilously low on supplies, Jason turns to Hera. She guides him to the Isle of Bronze, but warns him to take nothing but provisions. However, while chasing some goats, Hercules and his young friend Hylas find a partially-open treasure chamber of the gods, surmounted by an enormous bronze statue of Talos. Despite Hylas' warning, Hercules steals an enormous brooch pin the size of a javelin. The statue comes to life and attacks, causing much mayhem before Jason can destroy it using Hera's advice. Hylas is missing and presumed dead, but the guilt-ridden Hercules refuses to leave until he knows for certain. The other Argonauts will not abandon Hercules, so Jason is forced to call on Hera for the last time. She confirms that Hylas is indeed dead and that Hercules is destined not to continue with them. She also directs them to seek out Phineas, the blind seer, for the way to Colchis.
They find him tormented by two Harpies sent by Zeus to punish him for misusing his gift of prophesy. In return for imprisoning the flying creatures, Phineas tells Jason what he needs to know. In gratitude, Phineas also gives Jason his only possession, an amulet. To reach Colchis however, they must pass between the Clashing Rocks, a strait flanked by towering rock cliffs that shake and drop boulders to sink any ships attempting to pass between them. Fortunately for the Argonauts, they learn this second hand. Another ship tries to run the strait from the other direction and founders. In despair, Jason throws Phineas' gift into the water; a giant merman surfaces from the water and holds back the rocks long enough to let the Argo pass through. On the other side, they pick up the few survivors of the other ship, including Medea, the high priestess of the goddess Hecate.

They sight Colchis the next day. Acastus and Jason disagree on how to approach the King of Colchis, which escalates into a swordfight. Eventually Acastus is disarmed and jumps into the sea to escape. Believing him dead, Jason and his men accept an invitation from King Aeëtes (Jack Gwillim) to a feast, but once they are off-guard, they are captured and imprisoned. Acastus has betrayed them, telling Aeëtes about their mission. However, Medea helps Jason and his men escape.

Acastus tries to steal the Fleece himself, but is fatally wounded by its guardian, the many-headed Hydra. Jason succeeds in killing the monster and taking the Fleece. But Aeëtes is not far behind. He strews the teeth of the Hydra on the ground; they sprout into armed skeletons who pursue and battle Jason and two of his men (in a famous four minute stop motion sequence that took special effects wizard Ray Harryhausen four and a half months to produce.) Seeing that his companions have been slain, Jason escapes by jumping off a cliff into the sea.

With the quest fulfilled, he, Medea and the surviving Argonauts start the return voyage to Thessaly.

Raffles vs Kings

On Sunday 10 November 2008 Kings played against Raffles in football.
At first Raffles were the ones with the ball the most; consequently they scored a goal.
Then we got the ball and with Matthew S' shot accuracy we came back with a goal.
After that Oisin powerfully struck the ball and it went in the back of the net.
There was some good passing and dribbling by Matthew B and Adam O which helped us win.
Some exceptional saves from Trevor and good defending by myself.Also a big well done to Jamal,Tom and Tomas.Well done for being a good sport Uzair.

The Ancient Greek Island 'Rhodes'

Rhodes was a Greek island belonging to the sun god, Helios.

According to mythology, Helios fell in love with the nymph Rhodes. When the sun shone upon her she turned into a beautiful island, which the Greeks named after her. 'Rhodes' means rose, therefore the island was covered with colourful, sweet-smelling flowers.

Rhodes once was owned by Persian Leaders who used the island as a base when they were fighting the Greeks. When Greece won the war, they were allowed to have Rhodes. It became part of Athens, a major city. However, when the Romans conquered Greece, they took over Rhodes and it became part of Rome.

Rhodes is still around today and has many breath-taking sights such as the White City.

School Council -Grand Election Day Thursday 12 Nov

SCHOOL COUNCIL - HOMEWORK TASK
Who wants to be part of the school council? What kinds of things make a person 'good' for the school council? What kind of quailities should a student council member have? Later this week we will be voting in class for our own school council members. Prepare notes and ideas about why you should be considered to represent YKON on the school council. What will you do? Last Thursday all the swim squid went to Jess Jumeirah.We knew it was going to be hard but we did are best.I had to swim for Year 6 backstroke.We all swam our best, over all we came 3rd out of 5 schools. Look forward to round 2!!!

Lives Of The Slaves

Between a quarter and a third of Athens 300,000 population were slaves.

These were men and women captured in wars or born into slavery.

Many slaves had special skills,such as nurses and teachers,while others had the hardest and most unpleasent work to do.It was common for a rich household to have many slaves.

Some slaves were owned by the state.For example archers from Scythia were used as a kind of police force by the Athenian government.

The slavery wasn't as bad as some other empires as far as I know!!

Ancient Greek kids

GREEK BABIES: The ancient Greeks thought of their children to be "youths" until they reached the age of 30! When a child was born to an Ancient Greek family, the father carried his child in a ceremonial dance around the household. Friends and family sent gifts. The family decorated the doorway of their home with a wreath of olives (for a boy) or a wreath of wool (for a girl).

Strange that the Greeks thought of the children as youths for 30 years!

GREEK GIRLS: In Athens, as in most Greek city-states, with the exception of Sparta, girls stayed at home until they were married. Like their mother, they could attend certain festivals, funerals, and visit neighbors for brief periods of time. Their job was to help their mother, and to help in the fields, if necessary.

Poor girls. They don't seem to have mattered that much back then!

GREEK BOYS: In most Greek city-states, when young, the boys stayed at home, helping in the fields, sailing, and fishing. At age 6 or 7, they went to school.

Just think of boys nowadays! They start school at the age of 3, maybe 2!

Last week we had an excellent Gala against Jess ranches, Horizion, Wellington, Uptown and English Collage.
We all worked hard (Rory, Matthew, Charlotte, Hannah, Hazel and a girl who didn't swim...Lucy she showed excellent support!
I'm sure every-one enjoyed the gala because I sure did!
We came second just by one tiny little didy point Jess came first they had 251 and wehad 250!
That is the latest news and will fill you in next week with more sports and swimming galas!

Rory's Sports Report

This is Rory here trying my first attempt at the blog. I was very happy to see
Richard Pickup get King of the week this week, because he has been working
very hard this term. Also he is a great cub scout, we go together every Sunday
night to the 3rd Dubai Scopions.

Sports Report Latest ........... Thursday 30th Oct Swim Gala Kings Dubai School.
6 schools took place and when the Gala was all over Kings came second behind
JESS Ranches by ONE little point. !!!!!! The good news was that Hazel, Mathew,
Charlotte, Hannah and me ( Rory) all swam our best. Another good thing was that
our old class mate Lucy came by to cheer us on. It was great to see her again.
Next week we have another Gala away at another school...... will let you know the
results next week.

Our school trip

On Monday 26th October 2008, we visited a gallery in the DIFC building called Holy Lands.We spent the morning in class, then when the coach arrived we settled down into them.It took about 20 minutes to get there. When we got there, two supervisers told us what the gallery was about. They explained to us that it was about photos from hundreads of years ago. The two supervisers names were Sonia and Tena. They gave us a booklet that we could fill in. All the answers were in the photos or writing around the gallery.The floor in the gallery was sand.We spent 1 hour in the gallery, then it was time to go back to school. I thought it was a wonderful trip and great organisation. Thank You Mr.O'Neill!!

Paul Klee

I have been looking all night for facts about Paul Klee and when i went on to wikipedia i found out that he was very famous. I then looked at images and i saw lots of beautiful paintings. He had put in so much detail in the most boring pictures. Some of his paintings were really cool like the one which looks like he had put random circles in different places with different colours. His nationality was German and Swiss. He was born on the 18 december 1879 and he died on the 29 June 1940 (aged 60.)

Bread Making

We have been discussing how yeast works...

• Warmth is needed so that yeast cells can grow and multiply. This is why we add warm water. NB Boiling water kills yeast cells!


• The yeast needs feeding to grow, so we add sugar to the recipe.


• The dough needs to become elastic so that it will stretch and rise when the yeast begins to ferment. This is why we knead the bread.


• We need to give the yeast time to do its work and to produce carbon dioxide gas which raises the dough.


• A flour improver may be used to speed it up such as - Ascorbic Acid.

Football Game Against E.C Primary

On Monday 26th October 2008 kings dubai played E.C.
In the first half we dominated after our first goal by Mattthew S following on by Oisin and Matthew B.Our passing and dribbling was excellent as that was how we kept possesion.There were some wonderful saves from Trevor and some good defending by Adam B and Tom.Adam O did some very good passes and shots that helped us win.Late in the second half Uzair scored to make it 6-1 to us.

TODAY WE WENT TO A GALLERY IT WAS PICTURES FROM 100 YEARS AGO.IT took about 20-30 MINUTES.WE DID A FANSTSTIC QUIZ.

I thought The Museum was very interesting there was a lot of pictures and they were all black and white but some were coloured. The pictures were of people living in tents with camels out side. There was sand as the floor and I got my shoes dirty!

My classmates and I enjoyed an impressive art and photography exhibition showing the works of a variety of artists from the past.The theme of the exhibition was the history of pilgrimage of various religions such as Islam,Chiristianity and Judaism.I particularly enjoyed the Islamic part of the display looking at the old photographs.It was a very interesting and historical experince.

I really enjoyed are trip to the art exhibition and i learned about pilgrimage and it suprised me that photos could be taken that long ago.The pictures were fascinating and the work sheet was good aswell. I can't wait till we start learning about Paul klee!Some of my favorite pictures were the some of famous people and amazing citys.I must be a hard life being a pilgramage.They have to travel hundreds of miles in the hot desert.The cameras were enormous and weighted 50kg!My favourite part on the work sheet was the timeline and to finish the entire leaflet it took some investigating.

Year 5KON - From Russia With Love

Yes it's official YR5KON will be adopting Russia as our chosen country on International Day. It is a vast country stretching many miles from the Ukrainian border in the West right the way through the barren wastelands of Siberia and as far as the Sea of Japan in the East. It is a country with a fascinating and often brutal history. It is home to some of the greatest ever writers and muscians the world has ever seen. It is a melting pot of peoples and over 100 languages are spoken within its borders. As the weeks go on - I will be more specific with each house group as to what I would like you to research but for now feel free to post your own specific Russian facts and collated information as comments on this post.

Year 5 Smoking Debate

Smoking Debate

Year5 KON & Year 5JW came together today to debate the motion:
"This House beleives that smoking should be banned forever."
The classes divided themselves up into house groups with Stuarts and Tudors proposing the motion and Windors and Hannovers opposing it. Children from both sides had some forthright and strongly held views on this topical discussion. An array of debating techniques were used to enhance and further ones arguement. Rhetorical questioning, emotive language, real life characters and situations employed to further childrens' understanding of the implications of a rule change. The thing that impressed both myself and Mr. Watson the most though was how ready you all were to engage in debate and how people listened intently to the opposition before countering with all the skills of a Barrack Obama or a John Mc Cain!

Mrs. Hislop was the House Speaker. Mr. Watson was on the side of the proposing team and Mr. O'Neill on the side of the opposition.


Stuarts and Tudors
Main arguments for the banning of smoking everywhere.

• The health risks. 120, 000 people die in the UK each year because of smoking related illnesses.
• Roy Castle died of lung cancer and yet never smoked a cigarette in his life.
• Why should the tax payer have to continue to pay such a heavy bill for smokers?
• Lots of folk smoke and due to poor education or ignorance - they aware unaware of the damage that they are doing to themselves and those around them.
• Cigarette butts litter the environment and have caused further loss of life through quickly spreading fires.

Hanovers and Windsors

Main arguments against the abolition of smoking.

• In the freedom of ones own home and when consideration for others is taken into account - if someone still wishes to smoke that is their perogative.
• Tobacco growing countries and their economies would crumble over night.
• No one wants to see an illegal black market trade of cigarettes
• The man who has worked in the tobacco factory for 20years is now suddenly out of a job and maybe unemployable
• In Iraq - The American Forces have been using cigarette packets as a means of public communications. Packs have a telephone number on them - where you can report suspicious terrorist activities to the authorities. Perhaps saving lives?

Both sides agreed on a number of issues and an ammended motion is being implemented as we speak.

Mr. Watson and I would like to thank the children today for what we beleive was the highlight of Yr5 this year to date. Children argued their case with vigour yet still were big enough to concede certain points of the debate in order for the house to reach a comprimise.

Anti-Smoking Leaflets

As part of our Healthy Living topic Yr5 KON have been studying the harmful consequences of smoking both to the individual and those around him. As part of 'persuasive writing' we produced well researched and informative 'Anti-Smoking Leaflets'. Our aim was to use language that would literally shock a smoker into thinking twice about continuing their habit. We discussed making the smoker feel guilty and that it was important that they were presented with hard hitting facts. Children were asked to include a relevant 'rhetorical question' to further their position. The message from Yr5KON is a firm - KICK THE HABIT!

International Day

INTERNATIONAL DAY AT KINGS
International Day
Kings' is having an International Day on the 30th November 2008. Each teacher and class have to choose a country to adopt and embrace. 5KON have been given some clues as to which country our class will be adopting. All will be revealed very soon... though some children have been quite warm when guessing so far! We will team up with 5JW and both Year 6 classes to have a carousel of activities - learning all about 4 different countries from around the world. We will all be wearing costumes from our chosen countries or our home countries of origin to make the day even more entertaining and authentic. Ideas and suggestions as to how we can make 5KON a very welcoming and 'red' place - please post your comments.

Adrian Hayes

Mr O'Brien arranged for Adrian Hayes the explorer to talk to the children today in assembly. Teachers and children alike were left speechless as he regaled us with his expeditions to both the North and South Pole. He explained in great detail the sights, sounds and smells - so much so that many children thought they too were in the Arctic Regions. The children seemed very impressed at his entry into the Guiness Book of Records and the fact that he lead a team of climbers to the summit of Mount Everest. We all left the hall feeling energised and inspired - I know it made me feel guilty for complaining about a short walk to the shops in the Dubai summer!

Jamal looks back on Year 5 so far....

We have learned a lot over the past few weeks. Healthy eating and a healthy lifestyle. We have also been studying about what food contains and what happens if you do not eat sufficient vitamins and minerals. We are moving on to the heart and how it works and how the body works. It is fortunate that I researched the heart and circulation during the summer vacation; this has helped me with the work in school.

House Teams!
We have four house teams at Kings': Hanover (Green); Tudor (Red); Stuart (Blue) ; Winsdor (Yellow).
We have team stars on the wall in class, and when we do something well we put our names on. Each week in class a coin is awarded to the team that has performed the best and has the most names on it. These coins are added to our termly 'coin cup' for the whole school. We are also having an in class competition to see which teams get the most coins throughout the year.
